Lexus has finally hybridized its largest model, which joins the lineup in late 2024 with a new hybrid system that promises a smoother ride and a smaller carbon footprint. It’s like they realized it was the only Lexus without an electric option and decided, “Hey, let’s fix that.” So now, the flagship SUV, already adored for its “go-anywhere, in-style” vibe in over 50 countries, can tackle any road with even more eco-friendly swagger.
The Lexus LX 700h is diving into the hybrid game with all the muscle you’d expect, combining a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 with a motor-generator in a seamless parallel hybrid system. The setup keeps the essentials that make the LX an off-road beast—full-time 4WD, Lo-range transfer case, and a 10-speed automatic transmission—to ensure that engine and motor power are dished out without skimping on performance. So, yes, you’ll still conquer rocky trails and muddy paths while saving a bit on fuel.
The LX 700h hybrid also gives you some “hybrid safety nets”: if the hybrid system hiccups, the added alternator and starter will keep the engine running and power the 12V battery so you’re not left stranded. Even in this mode, off-road essentials like Lo-range, Active Height Control (AHC), and Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) stay operational, so you’re set for adventures even in emergency mode.
For deep-water crossings up to 700 mm, Lexus has added a waterproof battery tray and a sensor that alerts you if water does somehow sneak in, all so the LX can stay as amphibious as its conventional counterparts. Plus, the motor’s torque gives you smooth starts and low-speed control for technical terrain, making it easy to handle rocky, snowy, and slippery conditions.
Need power for the campsite or an emergency? A waterproof AC inverter can power up to 2,400 W, with outlets in both the rear console and deck, perfect for on-the-go electricians (or just charging your cooler and phone simultaneously).
Frame & suspension improvements
The LX also got some platform tweaks to handle the extra powertrain weight:
- There is new cross member and improved radiator supports to improve the frame rigidity.
- The 12V battery moved to the rear which will make it easier to replace. but not only that, because the dedicated metal tray and detachable battery brace will also improve the body rigidity around the rear quarter area.
- The updated cab mount cushions should reduce those low-frequency shakes you get from body-on-frame builds.
And then there’s the upgraded Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), with redesigned valve actuators. This should not only help to improve driving comfort over bumps, but it should keep the car more steady during low-speed stops on tricky terrain as well.
The weight of this car? Around 2.8 t.
Interior changes
The new LX 700h hybrid brings more gadgets than a James Bond car—except these ones make the ride comfier and the drive smoother. Let’s start with the giant 12.3-inch display, now able to show everything from engine oil pressure to the hybrid battery status (for hybrid models only) with the kind of customization options that will make any tech fan smile.
And exclusively for the hybrid version, Lexus introduces the new Electro-Shiftmatic system, complete with a special shift knob designed under the guidance of off-road experts. So now, tackling rough terrain feels like gripping a gear stick with a tailored glove.
Fancy seats? You bet. VIP and Executive drivers get front “refresh seats” with air-bladder massage functions to keep you from feeling like you’ve been off-roading all day, even if you have. There are five massage options and intensity settings, making it the most relaxed you’ll feel while steering through mountains.
Plus, Lexus has upgraded the wireless charging pad for the always-draining smartphone to a faster, front-console location—because no one has time for a slow charge, especially not while tackling rugged terrain in style.
Lets not forget the damn safety assist. features either
Lexus is raising its safety game in the LX, aiming for a future with “zero traffic accidents” (like Volvo)—and bringing some clever tech to help make that a reality.
The latest Lexus Safety System+ on the new LX not only warns you when things get risky but now it watches you as well, using a driver monitoring system to keep things safer if you’re distracted or a bit off your game.
The Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) helps the driver with spotting potential dangers like pedestrians or unexpected obstacles and jumping in with timely assistance—slowing down on turns, stopping for intersections, and helping out in lane-keeping. To top of that, if it senses you’re too distracted, it gives an early nudge or even activates Lane Departure Assist faster than you can say “daydream.”
And if things go really sideways? The Driver Abnormality Response System has your back: it activates the hazards, slows the car down, brings it to a safe stop, unlocks the doors, and even calls for help. So, while you’re getting from A to B, Lexus is making sure safety is on full auto-pilot.
Additionaly, the “Lexus Teammate” driving assistance technology is here to save you from traffic jams and tricky parking spots. With “Advanced Drive” (a.k.a. Traffic Jam Assist), it takes over when you’re crawling at 0-40 km/h on the highway, so you can stay cool and let the system handle the grind. It watches, it judges, it even steers—basically, it’s your personal traffic therapist.
And for parking? Advanced Park is smarter than ever. Not only does it do parallel parking, but it’s mastered front-in parking, too. Plus, you don’t even have to be in the car—just use an app on your phone to park remotely! Perfect for when you need a bit more space to wrangle the kids or grab that last grocery bag. In short, Lexus Teammate is the co-pilot you didn’t know you needed, making driving and parking way less of a chore.
